Recently I was in northern Italy on business and while there decided to take a side trip to Lake Como. It is an amazing place, a slice of heaven tucked away amongst beautiful mountains and a clear blue lake, blended with Italian hospitality and rich, timeless culture. Italians are CRAZY drivers, but oh, I luv them!
While visiting Bellagio I came across a spectacular memorial commemorating a great man, who is still being recognized with respect all over the world.
Standing there in deep reflection and quiet reverence my mind triggered a memory of myself when I was a little girl. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my mom and all of a sudden, clearly upset, she abruptly jumped up listening intently to news she had just heard on the radio. In total disbelief she sat down and started to cry. I can still vividly remember that experience and how quiet the mood was in our home for several days.
Years later I would learn that John F. Kennedy, the 35th American President was assassinated that day, Nov. 22, 1963. He was a strong advocate of civil rights; he initiated the space program and had a robust vision to unite the country, and support ALL Americans.
Even now, six decades later while I write this blog his legacy is still being honored with deep respect & admiration.
Are you being challenged with stress & anxiety due to life’s changes?
Think back in your own lifetime when something devastating had happened to you. For example: Can you recall exactly what you were doing when you heard about the 911 terrorist attack, and can you remember the intense emotion and shock that went thru your system at that time? I certainly do.
You all will remember that the United States recovered very well and gallantly continued on. Memory is an amazing tool we possess and is a powerful mental faculty that we rarely use. You see, your mind houses a massive memory bank that is virtually unlimited and can instantly retrieve thoughts way back from your childhood, as my memory did when I was in Italy.
Not only does your mind retrieve memory input but it also triggers emotions that you experience in ‘the now’ even though an event took place decades ago. The world has witnessed devastation for centuries, some countries have recovered quicker than others. Many countries have weathered the storms with strength & resilience in order to deal with crisis with unprecedented vigor and stamina in order to adapt to the situation and move forward. Think back in history when the worlds population have successfully recovered in tough times:
The Civil War, Great Depression, two World Wars, Terrorist attacks, Wildfires, Earthquakes, the Global Covid Pandemic that killed millions of people all over the world, hurricanes and flooding, just to name a few. In every calamity, people have learned how to adjust and bounce back with faith and resilience thru these tough times. In regards to the changes taking place in our world right now, it cant possibly be as challenging as the events just mentioned. I like to put things into perspective.
In most instances when the going gets tough, people not only show up, but they support each other as well as provide a helping hand for countries in need, regardless of race, status, culture or political views. Why? Because we all live on the same planet, and this is our home.
A recent report I read mentioned that the United States is one of the top ten in the world in regards to individual resilience when handling adversity, Denmark and Sweden are on the top! If you study their economics and quality of life you would understand why.
In respect to many of my clients who are American and the recent devastation of the massive wildfires that hit Los Angeles, as well as the political struggles in the U.S. I truly emphasize. A strong resilient attitude shows a strength of spirit, compassion for others and love for country as we ALL learn how to adapt to adversity so we can look forward to a brighter future on this beautiful planet. One we need to protect and preserve for our children’s future and generations to come.
“Resilience is a choice. It’s choosing to rise above your circumstances, no matter how difficult, and become the person you are meant to be” David Goggin
